Privacy Policy
TutorCake (“TutorCake,” “we,” “us”) operates tutorcake.com and academy.tutorcake.com (together, the “Services”). This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We designed TutorCake for families, so we keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the Services.
1. Information we collect
From parents and teachers
- Account information: name, email address and password (stored as a secure hash) when you create an account.
- Purchase information: what you bought and when. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see or store full card numbers.
- Communications: messages you send us and your email preferences.
- Usage information: pages visited, device and browser type, and approximate location derived from IP address, used for security and to improve the Services.
About children (TutorCake Academy)
Student profiles are created only by a parent or guardian. For each student we store a first name or nickname, grade level, an avatar choice, a username, and a PIN (stored as a secure hash). We do not collect a child’s email address, phone number, photo, precise location, or any contact information, and children cannot communicate with other users through the Services.
As a child uses the Academy we record learning activity: lessons started and completed, answers to comprehension questions, scores, time spent, stars, badges and certificates earned. This information is used solely to deliver the learning experience and to report progress to the parent.
2. Children’s privacy (COPPA)
We comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. We collect personal information from children only with the consent of a parent or guardian, obtained when the parent creates the student profile, and only for the purpose of providing the educational service. Parents may review, update or delete their child’s information at any time from the parent dashboard or by emailing us. We do not use children’s information for marketing, advertising or profiling, and we do not sell it to anyone.
3. How we use information
- To provide, maintain and improve the Services and deliver purchased products.
- To process payments, send receipts and manage subscriptions.
- To send service messages (for example password resets or progress summaries) and, if you opt in, reading tips and offers. You can unsubscribe at any time.
- To keep the Services secure and prevent fraud or abuse.
- To comply with legal obligations.
4. How we share information
We do not sell personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us operate the Services under contracts that limit their use of the data: Stripe (payments), Supabase (secure database and authentication hosting), Hostinger (website hosting), and email delivery providers. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.
5. Cookies
tutorcake.com uses only essential cookies and local storage needed for the site to work. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. If we add analytics in the future it will be privacy-respecting and disclosed here.
6. Data retention and security
We keep account and purchase records while your account is active and as required for tax and legal purposes. Student learning data is kept while the student profile exists; deleting a profile deletes its learning data. Passwords and PINs are hashed, connections are encrypted with TLS, and access to production data is restricted.
7. Your choices and rights
- Access, correct or delete your account information from your dashboard or by emailing us.
- Delete a student profile and its data at any time.
- Unsubscribe from marketing email using the link in any message.
- Residents of certain jurisdictions (including California and the EU/UK) may have additional rights to access, port, restrict or object to processing; contact us to exercise them.
8. Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version here with a new “last updated” date and, for material changes affecting children’s data, notify parents by email.
